Wal-Mart Loses Suit

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 12 (AP) — Wal-Mart Stores forced employees to work through rest breaks and to put in extra hours without pay, violating Pennsylvania labor laws, a state jury found Thursday.
The jury, however, ruled in Wal-Mart’s favor on a separate charge that it denied meal breaks to workers.
The jury must now decide damages in the class-action suit, which covers up to 187,000 current and former hourly Wal-Mart workers.
Plaintiffs’ lawyers say the damages could reach $162 million.
Wal-Mart is facing many similar suits around the country. Wal-Mart settled a Colorado case for $50 million and is appealing a $172 million penalty from a California jury last year.
With the two verdicts and more than 50 pending cases, “I think it reinforces that this company’s sweatshop mindset is a serious problem, both legally and morally,” said Chris Kofinis, a spokesman for WakeUpWalMart.com, a union-financed group.
Wal-Mart declined to comment because of the pending deliberations over damages.
