The Black Daddies Club Taboo series presents Queer As (Black) Folk: A Conversation on Homosexuality and Homophobia in the Black Community. The discussion will take place on Saturday, 26th November 2011 in the spacious George Vari Engineering and Computing Centre at Ryerson University.

As some of you may recall, the original name of the event was Boom Bye Bye: Homophobia in the Black Community. However, after some discussion, this was shelved because it was felt that it carried overt references to violence against members of our community who self-identify as gay/ lesbian/ bisexual/ transgender/ queer.

Whatever the personal opinions of individual members of the BDC may be, we as an organization stand in open opposition to any calls for violence against anyone in the Black community. Furthermore, because we are committed to creating a safe space where everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, would feel comfortable expressing their opinions, we concluded that the name change was simple common sense.

Despite the fact that virtually all of us know (or know of) Black people who are lesbian/ gay/ bisexual/ transgender/ queer, the silence around this reality in the African and Caribbean communities in the GTA is, frankly, deafening. We intend to shatter that unhealthy silence on the 26th of November and, to that end, we will be jumpstarting the discussion by posing questions on our Facebook page and Twitter (under the hashtag: #queerasblackfolk).

The first question: As a parent, would it be harder to accept your daughter or your son telling you that she/ he was queer/ gay?

We have already received some great feedback. Read some of the opinions posted on Facebook (some of which are seen below)…and feel free to weigh in with your thoughts!

For me both would be just as difficult as I view the gay reality as a psychological abnormality issue which should be addressed as such. Like with someone who is Schitzophrenic, has ADHD, addicted to eating tissue, or something like that. Living with it wont kill them but I would prefer if something could be done to address the condition and “fix” whats “broken”.`

I asked my father the very same question and he said he would rather have a queer daughter than a gay son.

How many of us had the choice in being heterosexual? For the most part we were socialized into that “choice.” The sexual orientation or gender identity selected by my children would be totally theirs and would be accepted unconditionally.
