BLACK MY STORY by PAPA GRAND……..
HELLO SCOTIA happy black history month i just recently returned from Jamaica and once again had the chance to be amongst The MAROONS……….so in the tradition of oral history i would like to share my experience with you all of African decent who have pride in there indigenous scotian history and our relationship to the greatest legacys and storys of the world and the black diaspora………..HOTEP
I am proud to be a 7th generation indigenous Scotian from the Preston Township…. I WRITE THIS FOR OUR ANCESTORS…………..
I felt a need to share some history with yal that some people are aware of but not indepth. I was fortunate to meet with elders from Africa and Jamaica and they taught and bestowed some incredibly rich information ..
I traced my roots back to Ghana and the ASHANTI TRIBE in Africa. These individuals were great scholars of many professions and trades but not only were they highy educated they were also very rebellious ,strong and courageous this tribe from Ghana and some from Nigeria were as you forced into slavery but during this voyage there were so many problems with this extremely vibrant group of slaves that they refused to let them go to America in fear of a uprising ,instead they sent the most aggressive and educated slaves to Jamaica not america lol
This is when the Spaniards were in control of Jamaica started releasing the slaves because they were threatened by being overthrown by the British so the the Spaniards retreated before being conquered lol or colonized ….

Now back to the the ashanti tribe arriving in the west Indies via the current in the Atlantic middle passage trail ……….The ASHANTI TRIBE eventually become the Jamaicain MAROONS. this group of slaves Are the ones who fleed to the mountains for freedom(like the field negros of America to Canada….) the word Maroon…..means man in the mountains…… they eventually joined sides with the Spaniards to fight against the British that were determined to colonize the island . But because there forces were so strong and the Spaniards had no real alience with the maroons they gave up but this is where it gets extremely interesting to me cause the Maroons were led by captain Cudgoe but the most powerful and fearless leader of all the Maroons was a lady named QUEEN NANNY
she is the reason that the Maroons were masters of Gorilla warfare, black magic, obia etc.
Because of the tenacity and fearlessness, will power plus courage of the Maroons…… they proved to be to hard to handle eventually won the lenthy war by ambush tactics in the mountains of st Elizabeth in the Maroon communitys of Trelawny andt Accompong town these soldiers became the first and only group to ever beat and conquere the. British forces………..this lead to the signing of the (Maroon Treaty of 1739) witch made all maroon communitys a soverion state within the country of Jamaica witch means they have there own land, constitution, government, laws, history, tradition, hiritege, culture, ceramonys that is totally separate from the rest of Jamaica :
they celebrate ……Captian Cudgoes earth strong (birthday)every year on January 6 in the community of acompong town in the parish of st Elizabeth ………wow 60″”percent of Jamaica don’t no this history so i don’t expect u too , but when i was 18 i was selected to be a youth exchange student/ambassador and go to Jamaica to live for three months as it was the 200th aniversary of when the maroons arrived in Halifax and put in Preston…………..
My first time there was 16 years ago i was chosen to go meet with Reta Marley and a lady named Prestist Gloria and they basically show me who i was and where my ancestors came from and how they could tell i was on a serious journey it changed my life forever i was in tears cause this was Bob Marleys wife and backbone so i was honored and humbled ……..
Ok let me dig deeper into the story now and how it directly conects to
Scotia.

I just was @ the 274th anniversary for the signing of the treaty,i stayed in the mountains with the people and prietist gloria aka Mama G (my Maroon Mentor)& Rita Marley who gave me my name Papa G 16 years ago. She called me and said it was time to come back because this year is (twenty dozen) times of heightened consciousnous and spiritual replenishing . So last minute i jumped on the plane cause i felt it was ment to be ……….
Soon as i arrived in the maroon village got out the car all of the maroon chife and Corniel and all the people i met 16 years ago were there to greet me it was awsome..30 min later the elders started druming ,marching and singing in the streets. For about an hr …………..the lyrics of the song said !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nanny has come back clear out the road Clear out the road Halifax will one day come home……because the maroons that were sent to nova Scotia were the stuffed ones ,most aggressive, most dominant of the 5 maroon villages ……..a place called TRELAWNY TOWN in the parish of st james…..is it a coincidence that Colleys ,James,Willis,Simmonds as well as many others are the same and if you have maroon blood in you can free land plus tax free on the most sacred land in Jamaica (I’m not done)
Why are the roads to maroon communitys called NEW ROAD and all on hills ………..
Why was one of nova Scotias most prominent politicians ….Governor Wentworth responsible for bringing the Maroons to Scotia to build citadel hill but he settled them in Preston that’s why Wentworth mansion was in east Preston on top of colleys hill that was once the location of the first maroon boarding house and musem but some how it got burnt down to ground and u never heard of it lol. Wow
Its also incredible that there has been only 2 murders in over200 year on maroon land only in Jamaica!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow

After the Maroons built the citadel hill they were given lands grants all over Preston ,wesphal,Achilles aka Maroon hill and of course africville ………….. and after it was all said and done governor wentworth started the SIERA LEON COMPENY……..that aloud the free black folk a chance to live there dream and go back home to Africa .
But for most there dreams turned to nightmares because alot of the ships sank in the bad weather and conditions at sea.
But the ones Arrived in Freetown Siera Leon went to the freedom tree and made history together……..
The end. ………………remember Marcus Garvery has land in cape breton as well and his father was a maroon too ……..
Let us not forget the migration of the Loyalists and all the other blacks that came after the American revolutionary war of 1812 and of course all the black on the underground railroad ……..we Scotland have so much to be
proud of so please protect, preserve and promote our history….!our ancestors need to be honored………..god bless u all
but remember this quote from Hariot Tubman…..i freed 1000 slaves and i could have freed 1000 more

I am in the process of creating a jewellery line focusing on our black history. I would like one of the pieces to be reflective of the Maroon people. When the time is right, would it be ok to contact you for some insight into what makes the Maroons such a unique and precious people.
Sincerly,
Jackie
