For those of you who don’t know- I just got back from a trip to Burkina Faso for the 9th Annual Waga Hip Hop Festival http://www.wagahiphop.com/ It was an amazing experience, and very busy. I shot a ton of footage. There will be a series of new music videos that I will be releasing over the next few weeks, made from footage from that trip. I wanted to send you all a quick shout because I just finished up the first music video from that trip. The track is really heavy. The emcees have fled their home country of Gabon because of the lack of Freedom of Speech, and have since been bouncing from one Francophone african country to the next- hip hop being the only source of stability in their lives. They were living in Mali, now they are currently based in Burkina Faso. I hope you enjoy the video! (Info about the video below)
The 9th Annual Waga International Hip Hop Festival took place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in October 2009. Hip hop artists and activists from all over Africa converged on the tiny city of Ouagadougou for two weeks of bridge-buidling, networking, performances, and workshops. Poetes Fyziks, a highly controversial group from Gabon, met up with filmmaker Magee McIlvaine and decided to shoot a very quick music video during one of the breaks in the middle of the conference. Shot in 25 minutes, this video represents the importance of international collaborations and the power of festivals/events like the Waga Hip Hop Festival to bring people together.
